“But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45
Fundamental to the Christian life is the fact that Jesus has served us. This means that before any follower of Jesus thinks about serving others, we need to remeber that we have been served by the Lord of Heaven and Earth, who came to sacrifice his life for us.
The world tells us being a leader involves having others serve you. Generally, the more power you have in politics, business or other worldly endeavours, the more people you have under you doing your bidding.
Jesus teaches us that christian leadershp is to be very different from the leadership we see around us in the world. Jesus told his disciples that if we are to be great among our peers, we must be a servant. If we are to be first, leading others, then we must be a slave of all.
But service is not just reserved for leadership positions. Earlier in Mark 8:34, Jesus implores those of us who will follow Him that we must deny ourselves and take up our cross. His death and resurrection set the pattern for all who will follow after Him. He served others, and so shall we.
